Where it all started
During 2020 our founder John Whitbread - a local business in Measham Derbyshire - realised that due to Covid closing down other opportunities for networking, he had to find a solution for his business that fitted in with his family commitments and worked from home.
John knew that to grow his business he needed more support ideally from like-minded people similar to himself that shared the same passion and enthusiasm as he did, so he set out to build an online network called Cognates. This quickly gained momentum and became his main business.
Since then Cognates has grown to five groups. John left the network (his baby) in early 2022 to pursue other business passions and passed the baton to Sharon Keevins a founder member and owner of Kangaroo UK. Sharon has been rolling out many new changes, both in the back end and also the front end, providing more value to its members and enabling the network to grow and expand into other areas of the country.

We believe that having quality connections where every member fully understands how we can help each business is more important than having a high number of connections. This is why we cap our groups.
UNMONITORED REFERRALS
We do not track our referrals, and this is our strongest and best feature. Instead, we focus on the true foundations of networking, which is building quality relationships. This also means that because we don’t track referrals, we aren’t protective over what leads we get. Thus, ensuring all members are free to help increase the exposure for each member as much as they like.
